This is an account from a very rare breed – a brain scientist having a brain injury. Jill Bolte Taylor studied her own stroke as it happened. She talkes about her altered body perception and her experience of dying. Well worth a watch.

‘One morning, a blood vessel in Jill Bolte Taylor’s brain exploded. As a brain scientist, she realized she had a ringside seat to her own stroke. She watched as her brain functions shut down one by one: motion, speech, memory, self-awareness …’

“How many brain scientists have been able to study the brain from the inside out? I’ve gotten as much out of this experience of losing my left mind as I have in my entire academic career.”

Fascinating video and a rare opportunity. I must admit disappointment that she only presented the life affirming, emotional side toward the end instead of returning to science and an objective account of her progress and perceptions that may be altered by her stroke.
