Children imagine away pain

That magnificent imagination that kids have and that we somehow tend to lose as we grow up (why is that?) is apparently a powerful ally in attempts to reduce the frequency and impact of abdominal pain in kids.  Rather than describe it badly, have a look at the BBC coverage of it here ‘Children can be taught to use their imagination to tackle frequent bouts of stomach pain‘, and the abstract here ‘Audio-Recorded Guided Imagery Treatment Reduces Functional Abdominal Pain in Children‘.

The abstract includes a link to the pdf of the whole paper which, it seems, is free.  Congratulations Pediatrics.

Hypnosis can be hugely successful with with pain management and or treatment with children and adults alike but in my experience children respond much more readily to visualisation / imagination techniques as listed in the article and adults respond better to scientific explanation that is worded in a way they can easily comprehend. Knowledge is power and once a patient has an understanding of their pain, they can then have an understanding of how to manage it. There is now some fabulous research results supporting very positive results of managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome with the use of hypnosis also. However Pain Management is a specialist area so I strongly reccommend only visiting a Hypnotherapist with adequate training in the Pain Management area.
